How to Make Your Apartment Match Your Style

Decorating is a great way to make a new apartment feel like home. From finding the perfect couch to adding little touches that make it your own, it’s a great way to transform a space into something that’s truly yours. But decorating your first apartment can be difficult! There are rooms to fill, stories to tell and colors to choose. Fortunately, we can help.

Start with inspiration– What do you like? A new apartment is the best opportunity to make a space somewhere special. Are you autumn, or more of a winter? Do you like big bold colors and patterns, or is subtle more your style? Deciding on a theme or color palette early on can help your design in the long run.

Understand the space you have- It’s key to know what you can and cannot do in your new home. That three-piece sectional sofa might be sooo comfortable, but if it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit. If you’re picking out furniture, always bring a tape measure and know the dimensions of the space you’re trying to fill. If you find a cool coffee table at a thrift store, think about whether or not you can really fit another one in your living room.

Put yourself in your decoration- When decorating your space, it’s important to make it your own. No one needs a dozen white picture frames of stock photos. What is important to you? Are you a photographer? Hang some of your own art on the walls. Do you travel? Showcase some of your favorite souvenirs. Your apartment doesn’t need to be an immaculate ode to interior design, it needs to be somewhere you’re comfortable and happy to be.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match- There’s a fine line between bold and busy. A single bright accent piece can be a fantastic addition to any room, but it’s important not to overdo it. Clashing patterns can be fun, but one too many can be overwhelming. Try finding that once piece that you love, and working around it.
Recognize that it won’t happen overnight- When designing an apartment for yourself, it’s important to understand that this isn’t a day-long process. It’s a journey of self-discovery. Something that you had up on your wall 10 years ago may not inspire you anymore, so it’s key to know when to move on. Consider spaces you’ve seen elsewhere that you’ve loved. Your apartment is going to be a work in progress for a long time, and that’s okay! You’ll discover more about what you like and don’t like about design in this process than almost any other. Don’t forget to enjoy it.
